Don’t Let Your Travel Plans Derail Your Good Health
It’s the holiday season and the festivities have begun. Many of us will be traveling to spend time with family and friends. Whether you are going by train, bus, automobile or plane we’ve got the tips that will empower you to navigate your travels and remain healthy and stress free.
Here are our top 7 tips for staying healthy and (on plan) while traveling.
- Pack Healthy Snacks. Our go-to options are hard boiled eggs, protein bars, jerky and pre-cut veggies
- Limit Liquid Calories. Consuming sugar laden beverages and/or alcohol add empty calories to your day and provide little to no nutrition. Stick to water for added hydration!
- Pack your Gym Shoes. Most hotels have a fitness facility. Call ahead to make sure or check before booking.
- Preview Menus. When dining out, check out the menu beforehand. Going into a meal with a plan will help you make better choices and take the pressure off navigating the menu so you can enjoy time with your guests.
- Don’t Skip Meals. Even if you grab a protein bar, make sure to have something every 2-4 hours throughout the day. Sticking to your schedule will help keep your blood sugar steady and avoid overeating at mealtime.
- Eat Your Protein and Veggies. This combination will leave you feeling satiated longer and help you stay within your daily carb goal.
- Watch Your Portions. Most restaurants serve large portions. Keep in mind a serving of meat/fish is typically the size of your palm and a baseball is about the size of a cup of vegetables. Leftovers make a great doggy bag for the trip home.
- Enjoy Your Family and Friends. The holidays are a special time. Take deep breaths, be mindful and focus on spending quality time with loved ones.
